An Analysis of Deictic in The Main Character's Hatred Depicted in Movie Script Maleficent: The Mistress of Evil and Its Implementation in Teaching Vocabulary
(English Education Program Teacher Training And Education Faculty Purworejo Muhammadiyah University, 2024-08) Laela Savarrohmah
Deictic expressions, like "here," "there," "this," and "that," depend on the context and speaker's location for their meaning. These words require the listener to understand the speaker's perspective to comprehend their full meaning. The objectives of this study are to explain the types of deictic expressions found in the dialogue of the main character in the movie *Maleficent: The Mistress of Evil* and to describe how these deictic expressions can be implemented in teaching vocabulary. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The technique for collecting data involves analyzing deixis expressions from the dialogues of the main character in Maleficent: The Mistress of Evil. This process includes watching the movie to understand and identify key details, reading and observing the dialogue from the movie script, and finding sentences that contain different types of deixis. The result of the study indicates that there are five types of deixis are identified in movie Maleficent: Mistress of Evil including: person deixis (67%, 29 instances), time deixis (7%, 3 instances), place deixis (14%, 6 instances), social deixis (9%, 4 instances), and discourse deixis (2%, 1 instance), with a total of 40 deixis. Person deixis is the most prevalent, reflecting the main character's frequent use of personal pronouns to describe participants. Additionally, the study explores the application of deixis in English vocabulary teaching, suggesting that despite the lack of specific deixis instruction in the curriculum, the use of personal pronouns in the movie can help students identify and write down these forms through subtitles. This approach can enhance vocabulary teaching by encouraging students to record and explore unusual words they encounter.
