This research is concerned with compound words found in education
articles of The Jakarta Post. The aims of this research are to find out the types of
compound words, to find out the meaning of compound words found in education
articles of The Jakarta Post, and to describe the application in teaching vocabulary
at tenth grade of senior high school.
This research belonged to descriptive qualitative research because the data
of this research is collected by classifying the compound words found in the
education articles and the researcher as the key instrument. In collecting the data,
the researcher found, selected, read the education articles, and found the compound
words in the education articles. In analyzing the data, the researcher identified,
classified, counted, gave codes, described the types and the meaning of compound
words, applied the result of the analysis to teach vocabulary, and drew conclusion
and discussion.
The result of this research showed that there are 91 compound words found
in education articles of The Jakarta Post published on March 2019. Based on the
types of compound words, there are four types found in education articles of The
Jakarta Post. They are 50 compound nouns (54,95%), 8 compound verbs (8,79%),
21 compound adjectives (22,08%), and 12 compound adverb (13,19%). Based on
the meaning of compound words, there are two meaning. They are endocentric and
exocentric compound. Endocentric compound is more dominant than exocentric
compound. There are 55 exocentric compounds (60,44%) while, there are only 36
endocentric compounds (39,56%) found in education articles of the Jakarta Post.
This research can be applied in teaching vocabulary at tenth grade of Senior High
School.
