- ItemThe Effectiveness of Multimedia Powerpoint Presentation for Teaching Speaking Skills on the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 5 Purworejo in the Academic year 2025/2026.(Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Ilmu Keguruan Dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo, 2026-07-30) Afni Maulina 192120071The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is an effectiveness or not in applying the Multimedia Powerpoint Presentation to improve students speaking ability. This study uses quantitative research. The data were collected from August 16, 2024 to November 21, 2024. The population of this study was class XI students of SMA Negeri 5 Purworejo for the 2025/2026 academic year, with a total 250 students. The sample of this research is XI 1 and XI 2, totaling 70 students. This research findings show that the application of Multimedia Powerpoint Presentation is effective to improve students speaking ability. This is evidenced by the mean post-test score of the experimental class which is 79.34. Meanwhile, the mean post-test control class was 60.03. The mean of students in experimental class is higher than control class. The results of the increase is also avidenced by the value of the t-test. The researcher found that t-test show that the t value higher than t table (12.607 > 2.000) and the p value was much smaller than the significance level α (0.751 > 0.05). so Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected, indicating a significant difference between the post-test results of the experimental and control classes
- ItemThe Analysis of Abbreviation Found in Science Articles on NBC News and Its Application in Teaching Writing(Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Ilmu Keguruan Dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo, 2026-07-15) Purnia Noviarianti 192120020The aims of this research are to identify the types of abbreviation and the meaning in science articles on NBC News, and also to describe the application of abbreviation found in science articles on NBC News in teaching writing. This research used qualitaive method. The data source is taken from science articles on NBC News published on January 2026. The researcher collected the data by opening website NBC News, downloading the science articles in the news on NBC News, reading the news of science in NBC News articles, and finding abbreviation word on the articles. In analyzing the data, the researcher identified the abbreviation, classified the data into types and meaning of the abbreviation, gave code of each data, counted the data, applied the result of the analysis to teach writing in senior high school, and drew conclusion and suggestion. The result of the research shows that there are six types of abbreviation in science articles on NBC News. There are 63 abbreviation in science articles on NBC News. The researcher found 5 true abbreviation (7.94%), 3 unit of measurement (4.76%), 4 acronyms (6.35%), 21 initialism (33.33%), 29 contractions (46.03%), and 1 suspensions (1.59%). The finding of this research can be applied in teaching writing in the topic about news for the twelfth grade students of senior high school.
- ItemExploring Motivational Messages In The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho And Their Application For Teaching Reading Comprehension(Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Ilmu Keguruan Dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo, 2026-08-05) Alam Puji Weliang 222120020Reading comprehension is an essential skill in English language learning. However, many students experience difficulties in understanding literary texts because they struggle to interpret implicit meanings and connect textual information with their prior knowledge. Literary works containing motivational messages provide meaningful contexts that can support the development of reading comprehension. This study aims to explore the motivational messages in Paulo Coelho's novel, The Alchemist, and provide idea for teaching reading comprehension. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method by analyzing quotations from Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as the analytical framework. Data were obtained from quotations from the novel, which were then categorized into five types of needs: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. The findings revealed that all five categories of motivational messages were found in the novel, with self-actualization being the most dominant category, accounting for 39.3%. This indicates that the novel emphasizes self-development, courage in pursuing dreams, and achieving life goals. Furthermore, other categories, such as love, belonging, and esteem, also play a role in shaping motivation and character development. This study also highlights that The Alchemist has pedagogical value for teaching reading comprehension The integration of motivational messages into literary texts can support students in identifying main ideas, making inferences, interpreting implicit meanings, and using textual evidence, while also encouraging meaningful personal reflection. Therefore, literary works can be effectively used as instructional materials to develop students' reading comprehension through meaningful interpretation and engagement with literary texts.
- ItemAn Analysis on Speech Acts in Guy de Maupassant’s Short Story “The Necklace"(Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Pendidikan Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo, 2026-01-06) Nurvyana Eka Darmananda 212120009This study aims to identify and briefly explain the types of speech acts found in the utterances of Guy de Maupassant’s short story “The Necklace.” Using Yule’s speech act theory, 51 utterances were analyzed and classified into representative (22), directive (25), expressive (8), commissive (2), and no declarative speech acts. The classification was based on primary acts supported by secondary or complementary acts reflected in the narration. The findings show that directive and representative speech acts dominate the story, functioning to advance the plot and reveal characters’ experiences and beliefs. Expressive and commissive speech acts occur less frequently because emotions and commitments are mostly conveyed through narrative description rather than dialogue. The results may serve as useful material for EFL instruction, particularly in enhancing reading skills.
- ItemEnglish Teachers’ Perceptions of Implementing the Deep Learning Approach in Elementary Schools(Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Pendidikan Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo, 2025-11-07) Nur Qohhari Jabbar 212120046This study examines how elementary school English teachers perceive and implement the deep learning approach, revealing generally positive views toward its potential to enhance creativity, independence, and active student participation. Using a qualitative case study design, the study involved interviews with fourteen teachers from rural areas in the southern coast of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Thematic analysis identified three key findings: (1) teachers value deep learning for promoting mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning; (2) differences in teaching experience, institutional support, and access to training lead to varied levels of understanding and confidence; and (3) although most schools provide adequate resources, their use remains limited due to insufficient technical guidance. Deep learning emphasized in recent Indonesian curriculum reforms serves as an alternative to traditional rote-based practices, yet its classroom application remains inconsistent. The study concludes that clearer conceptual training, continuous professional development, and stronger school support systems are essential for ensuring more effective and consistent implementation of deep learning in elementary English teaching
