The current of information flows fast. People all over the world are in
great need of information shared by many means and media. Through diversity
among nation, the word translation becomes such an oasis to undertake the
difficulties in transferring information. Translation in many ways not only
changes one language to another, but it hoped to be as close as possible with the
target language not only in term meaning but also in form and style. Idiom take
place as one of the most difficult task to handle by the translator, there is special
treatment for idiom to be successfully translated into target language. This
research aimed to analyze the translation strategy of idiomatic expression in the
novel and its Indonesian translation and to describe the application of idiom in
teaching writing.
This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data form is English
idiomatic expression from the novel. It was collected by reading the novel and
determined the idiomatic expression. After the data are collected, the researcher
analyzes the data with the Indonesian translation novel.
After the analysis, the researcher found that the translation strategies in the
novel are; translation using idiom with similar meaning and form with percentage
of 9%, translation using idiom with similar meaning but dissimilar form wit
percentage 12%, translation by paraphrase with percentage 72%, and translation
by omission with percentage 7%. The most dominant translation strategy is the
paraphrase. The researcher provides the application of idiom in teaching writing
in form of lesson plan. Finally the researcher suggests the translator and students
to have better understanding in idiomatic expression and also the strategies in
translating the idiom.
