A CONVERSATION ANALYSIS OF ADJACENCY PAIRS FOUND IN AUGUST RUSH MOVIE AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION IN TEACHING SPEAKING

Abstract
The aims of this research were to identify the classification and to find out
the most dominant of adjacency pairs found in August Rush movie and to describe
the implementation of teaching speaking. In this research, the researcher uses a
qualitative method to analyse adjacency pairs in the movie. The data source of this
research was August Rush movie. This research used documentation technique in
analysing the data. The researcher was watching the movie, reading the script,
finding and underlining the utterances of adjacency pairs inside. The researcher
used Yule’s theory. The researcher was identifying the patterns of adjacency pairs,
classifying the data, giving the data codes, describing and discussing the data,
counting the data, describing the implementation of the result of the analysis to
teach speaking in senior high school, finally the researcher was drawing
conclusions and suggestions.
From the analysis, the researcher finds eleven categories of adjacency pairs
in a conversation on August Rush movie. There are 47 adjacency pairs found in
August Rush movie. There are 1 greeting-greeting (2%), 1 summons-answer (2%),
0 apology-minimization (0%), 23 question-answer (49%), 3 requestacceptance/refusal (6%), 4 offer-acceptance/refusal (9%), 2 blameadmission/denial (4%), 0 invitation-acceptance/refusal (0%), 4 assessmentagreement/disagreement (9%), 1 command-compliance/incompliance (2%), 1
suggestion-acceptance/refusal (2%), 5 assertion-agreement/disagreement (11%), 2
announcement-acknowledgement (4%). Question-answer is the most dominant
one. Also, the finding of this research can be implemented in teaching speaking for
eleventh grade students of senior high school in the material of expression of
suggestion and its response.
