Abstract
The aims of this study are to describe students’ writing anxiety in academic writing class, to describe factors of students’ writing anxiety in academic writing class, and to describe the solution to overcome students writing anxiety in academic writing class at the fourth semester of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year of 2021/2022. This study employed a qualitative case study. The participants were forty-seven undergraduate students majoring English Education program. The instrument used in collecting data in this study were questionnaires and interviews. In conducting the research, the researcher did following the steps: (1) making a list of questionnaire and interview guide to know the students’ anxiety and factors in writing English, (2) validating the instrument with expert judgement, (3) giving the instrument, (4) selecting the students who have high anxiety scores, (5) making interview script to know how students solved their anxiety in writing English. The result showed that the students’ writing anxiety belongs to high category (67.23). The factors of students’ writing anxiety are fear of negative evaluation and fear of test, low of self-confidence, time pressure, insufficient writing technique, language difficulties, lack of topical knowledge, lack of experience or insufficient writing practice, pressure for perfect work, high frequency of assignment. The solutions to overcome the students’ writing anxiety are asking friends for help, consulting with lecturers, and reading journal references. It can be concluded that the students who took academic writing course indicates to have anxiety.
