Abstract
This research belongs to a qualitative research. This research deals with
kinds of auxiliary modal found in Ernest Hemingway’s short story The Short
Happy Life of Francis Macomber and its application in teaching grammar. The
aims of this research are to identify kinds of auxiliary modal used in Ernest
Hemingway’s short story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber and to
describe the application of the auxiliary modals found in teaching grammar.
In collecting the data, the researcher finds the script in Ernest
Hemingway’s short story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, reads the
whole text of the short story, and underlines the sentences that contain kinds of
auxiliary modal. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes the data with
the steps are the researcher gives codes in the sentence that contain kinds of
auxiliary modal, classifies the kinds of auxiliary modal used in short story, counts
percentage of the data, applies the finding in teaching grammar, and draws
conclusion and suggestion.
The result of the analysis shows that there are nine kinds of auxiliary
modal found in Ernest Hemingway’s short story The Short Happy Life of Francis
Macomber. From 204 sentences that contain kinds of auxiliary modal, 30
sentences (14.71%) contain auxiliary modal can, 37 sentences (18.14%) contain
auxiliary modal could, 7 sentences (3.43%) contain auxiliary modal should, 61
sentences (29.90%) contain auxiliary modal will, 47 sentences (23.04%) contain
auxiliary modal would, 4 sentences (1.96%) contain auxiliary modal may, 11
sentences (5.39%) contain auxiliary modal might, 5 sentences (2.45%) contain
auxiliary modal must, and 2 sentences (0.98%) contain auxiliary modal ought to.
Kinds of auxiliary modal can be applied by teachers in teaching grammar. Teacher
can use the kinds of auxiliary modal in Ernest Hemingway’s short story The Short
Happy Life of Francis Macomber to teach the student how to understand social
function, text structure, and linguistic elements of oral and written transactional
interaction texts that involve the act of giving and asking for information related
to offers, suggestions, and response according to the context of their use. The
strength of the teaching using short story as a media will attract the students in
learning process, then by dividing the class into groups, it will make students
more active and with the teacher’s feedback, students can choose the appropriate
auxiliary modal according to the context of their use.
