Nowadays, tense becomes serious problem to Indonesian students.
Besides, their motivation in learning English is still questioning. This background
leads the researcher to conduct this study. The objective of the study is to know
whether or not there is correlation between motivation in learning English and the
mastery of simple present tense for the seventh grade students of SMP N 12
Purworejo in academic year 2013/2014.
This research consists of two variables; independent variable and
dependent variable. The independent variable of this research motivation in
learning English. Then, the dependent variable is the students’ score of simple
present tense. The population of this research was the seventh grade students’ of
SMP N 12 Purworejo in academic year 2013/2014 with the total number 191. The
sample of this research consisted of 32 students. The technique of data collection
was using questionnaire and test. Meanwhile, the technique of data analysis was
using descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The inferential analysis was
done by manual calculation and SPSS.
The result of this research showed that there is high correlation between
motivation in learning English and the mastery of simple present tense. Based on
the computation of r-value using manual calculation and SPSS, the result was
0.75. and p-value < α (0.00< 0.05). It showed that Ha was accepted. From the
result, the researcher concludes there is high correlation between motivation in
learning English and the mastery of simple present tense. By using the result of
the research, the researcher gives suggestion for the teachers that they should
motivate students in Learning English and provide a better learning technique,
method, or media in delivering simple present tense.
